In the lecture, Waldenström will discuss his research on the history of the wealth distribution in the world dating back to the late 19th century. He will describe how the middle class has grown and how its share of the total wealth in Western societies has increased and argue that an unfettered market system does not necessarily lead to growing inequality. The basis for this progress was an institutional environment that enabled people to acquire education, save, and accumulate housing and pension savings. Waldenström will address how Western societies can secure these accomplishments while also encouraging further asset accumulation.
